After qualifying as an actuary in the UK, John came to Bermuda in 1977 with American International Group and gained six years of experience in the US insurance and reinsurance fields.  For the next six years he worked for a consulting operation formed by Conning of Hartford, Connecticut.  John has been the sole proprietor of Abbott Associates, an independent actuarial consulting firm since 1989.  In 1993 Abbott Associates signed a client referral agreement with the Boston office of a US actuarial consultancy, retaining independence but acquiring access to international resources. During the past ten years John has formed a strategic alliance with a consulting actuary based in Washington DC, Prof. Douglas A. Eckley PhD, FSA, MAAA.  He is a well-known professor at George Mason University and he has worked with John on several large assignments

John is involved with a number of pension and other benefit plans and acts as Actuary for several of them. His clients include insurers, reinsurers, pension and benefit plans, governments, self-insured groups and trusts.  His experience includes liability valuations, pricing, reserving, feasibility studies, statutory valuations, asset valuations, capital models and most other aspects of benefit and insurance plans.  In addition, John is a frequent adviser to governments in the region and sat for more than 8 years on the Admissions Committee of the Bermuda Monetary Authority, the Bermuda regulator.

John has been actively involved with the development of modern benefit plans and risk solutions and has spoken at actuarial conferences and is well known in Bermuda and to other insurance regulators. He currently sits on the board of several Bermuda based companies and is a full member of the Institute of Directors in London.
